June 27 2007: OH THE IRONY
Walking into uni early this morning (I was picking up some essays post-exam), I pass a guy putting flyers onto car windshields, securing them in place with the windshield wipers. As I pass him, he hands me one of the A4 flyers.
The flyer is advertising and campaigning for human reaction to climate change, conserving the environment, etc. It’s extolling the benefits of changing driving habits, water usage habits, conserving energy, etc.
I immediately double back, and ask him, “How many of these have you handed out?”
“I photocopied 500!” he says proudly. “I only have half of them left to give out!”
I pause. “So…you basically killed one tree to print off 500 flyers that people are just going to throw in the bin anyway?”
OH THE IRONY.
It would have been so much easier, and so much more environmentally friendly for him to simply ask the IT department of the university to send out a mass email to all staff and students about saving the environment. The Internet saves the planet people! Don’t you forget that!

Although there are numerous amounts of people who sit on their computers for hours and then leave them on overnight, which also generates large amounts of electricity that also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
So you know, save a tree, boil the Earth. *nods*

It’s a bit like the woman who was trying to get donations from people for lung cancer with a smoke hanging out of her mouth!

Haha! The Liberal Democrat party (United Kingdom) posted (yes posted) letters out to our Halls of Residence during the election period a few months ago. Each letter contained information on how they would help conserve the environment if they were elected. What annoyed me is we received one letter each, when we are divided into flats and so they could have just sent one letter to each flat (if it was absolutely necessary for them to send out letters), as we would have put it on the Kitchen table.

Have to agree with Tracey on that one to some extent. While the advantage of using my PC means that I don’t travel quite as often, I don’t tend to kill trees, I also use a considerable amount of energy.

Solar-powered computers are the future!

Yeah, there’s irony in it, but I also agree about the electricity we use with computers on all the time.
On a more extreme note, it’s like people starting riots to promote peace.

Heh, we have a Social/Environmental Justice club at our school and there’s this club introduction day where all school clubs make something to introduce to the juniors. Quite ironically, the club is making a tri-fold! I suggested a powerpoint, or a technologically based thing instead of wasting trees. Go figure.
