Flooding Feedreaders
May 24, 2007 | Filed under Online
I’m contemplating moving all my writings into the blog component of Jingwen – turning them into (backdated) blog posts rather than pages in their own section. Of course, it means that all people will have to do is click on the appropriate blog category in the sidebar, and they’ll be taken to the archives of all the writings of that genre : reviews, fiction, articles, etc.
I’m really tempted to do this. It’ll be considerably more keeping in the tone I originally envisioned for this site (e.g. a blog only, not a blog with a separate writings section). The only thing that’s stopping me, is the fact that I’ll be flooding people’s RSS readers with 70+ entries in the space of a couple of days which is of course, beyond annoying.
So I suppose the question is, how would you feel if I did that? Would it bother you if I flooded your feed readers with articles you’ve probably read before? Would it cause you to stop visiting and reading?

No… lol. I’d still come. I’d just delete them.

I would flame you with medication offers and would post on every single message board I’m a member of how much of an utter bitch and attention whore you are.
Or I would just re-reread them again for the pleasure of it.

I think they’re fine as they are, for all anyone knows they are just blogs that you linked. Although, if you switched to Textpattern you could stick them in a section and tell it to not syndicate *wink wink* jk, jk. It’s still a blog, since you made it clear that it was all for hits (you ho you) I don’t see why it’s a problem.

I wouldn’t mind too much, though I’d appreciate if you did it on the weekend so I didn’t have to sort through all those posts while I’m at work on the gimpy feedreader I use there.

I don’t feedread any sites so it wouldn’t bother me. You’ve just got to consider if it would effect the ease of navigation.
You should bring back the interviews. *nods* (Not being partial) XP

^ Agreed, I liked the interviews.
Anyhow, as long as it’s said in advance, I don’t care when my reader gets flooded. I’ll just tell it to read all without actually reading it, and I’m good to go from there. I just can’t stand people/sites that have, like, hundreds and hundreds of articles, and SOMEHOW every one of them is refreshed, and I go to check bloglines and it’s like… “you have five hundred and thirty seven new articles.”
O.O ?!!

Not a problemo for me; since I just check for the top 2 anyway for any entries that are new and whatnot. So, since I’m not receiving them by email or some other inconvenient method; I’m fine with it.

Not a problem for me either, I can just select your blog and click “Mark all as read”.
Besides, I haven’t really read all your articles, if you switch then I can just scroll down my feed and just read them from there! :D Win-win.

I haven’t checked my feeds in so long, that it wouldn’t matter. There’s probably at least 50 entries from you already. What’s another 70? :P

I might find it particularly annoying. I already get my feedreader flooded from BBC news and BBC sport. Of course, I’d still visit.
Amber on May 24, 2007 #
I’m too lazy to use feeds, meaning that I’m too lazy to learn how to use them (no don’t tell me). Plus I like visiting people’s websites (I’m a very visual kind of girl ^.^ ). So… er… I don’t mind. Not that this is relevant… but :P

I’d hate you for the rest of my life and never come back.
Not really.
Tracey on May 24, 2007 #
I wouldn’t particularly mind no, although I really fail to see the point. Like Becky, even though they are in their own section I still consider your site to be mainly just a blog.. :P
Matt on May 24, 2007 #
I wouldn’t mind, because my lovely feed reader has an option that says ‘Mark all as read’ so it will all be gone in an instant. Of course this might mean I miss a normal entry or two but hey you can’t have it all…
Chans on May 24, 2007 #
I still read blogs the old-fashioned way (via visiting the site) and I hardly use my feed reader. I wouldn’t mind at all. :)
Anne on May 24, 2007 #
I don’t really bother about feeds. I only read the latest on the sites :P

No it definitly would not stop me reading your blog. I am guilty of filling my feeds with crap and eventually I will decide to put an end to it – but as far as I am concerned no one abandoned me completely (yet).

By the way. There is a WordPress plugin that can hide your entries in a certain category from your feeds. You can activate it while you are adding the posts and de-activate it again when you are done I guess.
http://ryowebsite.com/?cat=11 – is the link – Which of course doesn’t matter if you know how to do this anyhow. Trying to be helpful – just.

It wouldn’t bother me; I’d just click the “Next Item” button…70+ times. :P
Li on May 25, 2007 #
I’d totally hate you for it.
J/k! =P I’ll come back to read your blog no matter what.
Susie on May 25, 2007 #
No I like reading it doesn’t matter and it’s my first time here but your blog post are actually very interesting.
exene on May 25, 2007 #
I really don’t mind reading the articles at all.
