May 5 2007: That Mystery Man

There’s a man I know. I don’t know his name, his age, his occupation, or anything about him other than his physical appearance and public transport habits. Yet I know little things about him – when he got a haircut, how he hates wearing a tie, and when he was breaking in a new pair of shoes. Courtesy of that gold band that’s newly on his finger, I also know that he got married five months ago.

I see him six times a week – three times on the way to work, three times on the way home from work. He catches the same trams as me on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and is always carrying the same Crumpler bag.

We’ve been seeing each other for about one and a half hours every week for the past year. I wonder if I’ll ever learn his name. I wonder what will happen the day that he doesn’t turn up…and what would have happened to him.

On a side note, does anyone know if you’re supposed to buy a Mother’s Day present for your boyfriend’s mother? If so, what’s appropriate?

  1. DON’T BUY YOUR BF’S MOTHER SOAP, that’s a real insult.
Buy her something cute, something she can stick somewhere, or buy her something appropriately fragrant, it will get you kudos for the future.
    :D p.s I linked you, your fantastic.

  2. If you wanna talk to him – all you have to do is crash into him when the train comes to a jerky halt one day and go “oops! sorry!” – and then work your magic.

I remember once I cried on a bus and this guy I talked to ended up being a Product Designer (same field that I am studying) and I got to learn a great deal about useful the “engineering” component of my studies are.

I don’t know about presents for a bf’s mother – I’ve never had to meet them. Probably should ask your bf.

  3. Sit next to him on purpose and go “Hi! I’m Amanda!”. :D It might scare him a little but he might give up his name. ;)

  4. Bump him on purpose, and drop your stuff (make it as little as possible) then apologise, while picking up these things. Then if he helps, thank him and say, “Thanks… uh, what’s your name?” This happens in books, I wonder if it applies to real life *wonders in fantasy world*

Presents for Mom’s Day? Maybe a bouquet of flowers of even chocolates :) That’s my last idea :S I don’t know what adults like :(

  5. You should just one day go up and talk to him.

A mother’s day present? Depends on how long you have been with him. A card would be most appropriate.

  6. it’s funny how you get to “know” some people you see on the bus very often. I don’t have any people that I see as often as you see that man tho, but there are still quite many that I see often and recognize.

For mother’s day, I’d go for flowers. I don’t know if you’re “supposed” to buy presents, but flowers are nice and in my opinion always welcome!

  8. I’m going to get my boyfriends mom candy and flowers, I think… but I’m trying to get bonus points, ha.

    I don’t know, it’ll be awkward. Oh well :(

  9. You can try to simply go up to him and introduce yourself.

It’s intriguing when you see someone you don’t know that much that often. I take the train everyday but I don’t see the same people! Baah, there must be too many people in Manila.

  10. Today I totally accidentally fell onto this guy on the subway when it started and I didn’t have my balance yet. I apologized, he asked if I was okay, I smiled and said, yeah. He got off two stops later. No cute little conversation and I don’t know his name. Which is a shame because he was cute and I was dressed cute and we could have been so damn cute together if there was only a movie camera on us!

  11. I’m slightly disappointed. I thought you were going to tell us how you had a ‘connection’ and that he was really hot. I could have pictured it in a movie setting with “Longer – Delta Goodrem” playing in the background.
