May 31 2007: Girl Love
I just figured out what I want for my birthday. Or, you know, for any occasion really. A random present for no particular reason would be nice. To Real Life people who read this blog (P, Allie, Robert, Sulynn, Scottie, my mother, anyone else?) - yes, that is an incredibly blatant hint. You know what to do.
I’ve owned the Spice Girls movie “Spiceworld” on videotape since the age of ten. However, due to repeated viewings every other month, the video quality has rapidly deteriorated. I can’t complain though - it has provided me with ten years worth of incredible happiness and Girl Power joy.
But, because of the now-poor quality of the video, I need a new copy of the movie - preferably in DVD format. That should provide me with another ten years of quality viewing! Alternatively (or in addition?) of course, I’d welcome a tape/DVD of the performance of the Spice Girls in Istanbul. I remember watching the performance on TV when it aired at the peak of their popularity. I also recall that it was aired again just a few weeks later because of the sheer numbers of people who tuned it.
If you do decide to be incredibly generous and buy me a copy, just email me at acchamanda at gmail dot com, and I’ll give you the address to mail it to. Of course, it’ll help if I kind of vaguely know who you are, just so I can make sure it’s not some wicked scheme by a potential stalker to find out where I live. Yes, I am referring to you Paddy.
And in other totally unrelated news, Timbaland’s “Shock Value” album is the best thing since sliced bread and sex toys. Go download/buy it.
ETA: The TFL-approved Spice Girls fanlisting is now up and running. :)

May 31 2007: Paris Hilton: Youth Celebrity
”Youth celebrities express nothing other than the structure of international media systems.” Do you agree? In your answer, you should identify a media figure admired by young people, and outline the structural and cultural factors explaining his or her emergence as an object of desire.
The status of celebrity is essentially manufactured by the different factors which make up today’s society - it is a product of the people’s desires and interests, a result of the political environment of our time, and can be considered the physical manifestation of the way society sees themselves, or wants to see themselves. With the variety of media these days (everything from television, radio, print, Internet, etc.), it goes without saying that celebrities can transcend fame initially found in a specific medium - they may make their fame through one medium, but they can, and most likely, will cross over into another medium.

May 30 2007: Essayer Ecrire L’Essay
I should be writing my last essay of the semester - “Youth celebrities express nothing other than the structure of international media systems.” Do you agree? In your answer, you should identify a media figure admired by young people, and outline the structural and cultural factors explaining his or her emergence as an object of desire.
Who else would I write about other than Paris Hilton? Duh! It’s due on Friday, and I’ve written precisely 330 words out of a minimum of 1800. So that’s…what, 1470 to go? Yipes.
I really should stop listening to Faye Wong singing a Cantonese version of the Cranberries’s “Dreams”, and get to work. No more Faye! No more Faye! More Vanness Wu! Mmm…semi-naked Taiwanese pop star.
Wow, what a weird train of thought.
Edit@10:46pm: 939 words! Only 861 to go!
