April 26 2007: Aqua-Tinged Reminiscing
Filed under Fashion & Friends & Media & Money
Over the past few days, I’ve been uploading my old CDs onto iTunes. As a result, I:
- Have four days worth of music, and am still uploading
- Am listening to songs I haven’t heard for years
Anyone remember Aqua? As I was uploading their debut “Aquarium” album1, I found myself reminded of someone I had gone to primary school with. He could probably be defined as the first in a long string of best guy friends - we used to hang out together at recess (and we all know how that’s the definition of ‘best friend’ when you’re ten years old).
In any case, we used to have a special set of non-verbal actions that we used to use in order to ‘talk’ to each other in class during silent reading time, actions that were based on songs that were popular at the time. For example:
- Miming licking a lollipop to represent Aqua’s “Lollipop (Candyman)”
- Weird hand movements for Madonna’s “Frozen” (watch the MV, you’ll see what I mean)
- Fluttering a hand as though it was a butterfly flying away (Mariah Carey’s “Butterfly”)
- Clutching at one’s chest in agony (Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”)
I wonder whatever happened to James Hunt. If he ever googles his name and finds himself here…please, please email me. I’d like to catch up, if only to thank you for being the first male to show me that not all boys have cooties, and that some boys can be fun to be with.
And in other news, I bought a pair of black stirrup Witchery pants from David Jones today for $7.95. They were originally $99.95. I…wow. Just, wow.
1Don’t laugh! There’s no greater joy in life than to be driving with the windows down with “Barbie Girl” blasting from the speakers.

Anything that comes out of that part of world HAS to be of the great variety.
I preferred ‘Dr. Jones’ to ‘Barbie Girl’ personally.

I love Aqua when I was little. I like Roses are Red, Dr. Jones, Turn Back Time, and Barbie Girl.

Lucky. Lucky. Lucky. Girl.
I ended up spending $40 on a pair of black heels today. Total rip - but I need them for tomorrow. I wish I got witchery pants for $10. I’m SO jealous. We should go shopping sometime together >_

Aqua’s first album was on literal, non-stop loop during my HSC.
And OMG more incredible bargains! I was tentatively walking through Myers the other day and was just absolutely disheartened at the prices. Yet you seem to snag such bargains! *mind boggles*

Even though that Lene Nystrøm is Swedish - Aqua was always considered a Danish band - and therefore a Danish shame.
I though they were cool though and I remember seeing them live a few times. It was not something you bragged about here though.
Now - only old people listens to Aqua… (turns on speakers)

You’ve missed out B*Witched’s “C’est La Vie” and Westlife’s “When You’re Looking Like That” (with the seamless hand movement).
Good times…

“I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie wooorld”
haha, if I dig up my old CDs it would probably include something along the lines of “Genie in a Bottle” and “Oops, I Did It Again”..ahh, middle school and the 90s.

Ah yes, the musical stylings of Aqua. *lmao* I never wanted to admit that I liked the song “Barbie Girl”, but I did. It’s one of those poppy songs that you love, but don’t want anyone to know that you do. ^^
I hope you’re able to find your old friend. It’s hard to lose touch with such good friends. I’m actually still keep in touch with my best friend from around the same age. It took a lot of work to track her down here and there, but we still email on a semi-regular basis. I wish you lots of luck in tracking down your friend! :)

I still have my Aqua CD, plus bonus disc! It’s the only one left over from my childhood. The rest got traded in so a) I could buy some new ones more suited to my current taste and b) get rid of my shameful, shameful past. ;) The Aqua CD only survived because I trod on the case about 20 times (likely story, you might think), but I sure did love them back in the day.

I downloaded a bunch of aqua music about a month ago, and listen to it when I walk somewhere. It’s really awesome music to walk to!

Oh…I still have some Aqua on my mobile to cheer me up whenever I feel like I need it. It’s just fun, silly music to cheer you up.
I like Lollipop og Good morning Sunshine best.
Nan, let me correct you here. Lene Nystrøm isn’t Swedish but Norwegian. Sorry, but I couldn’t help it.

Oops - I sometimes have difficulties telling the difference between Swedish and Norwegian… Didn’t we Danes use to pwn you all once? ;)
