March 26 2007: Flashing

There seems to be an unwritten “Driver’s Code of UNethical But Ultimately Good-For-All-Concerned Behaviour” here in Australia, whereby drivers will warn drivers going in the other direction if there’s a police car up ahead with a subtle flash of their headlights.
Booze bus up ahead? Never mind the fact that we’ve had a few drinks, that gent in the car we just passed flashed his lights at us so we’re pre-warned, we can just take the side streets and risk our lives by drinking and driving.
It’s illegal of course, but who’s to stop every single driver from doing it? I confess myself thankful when other drivers warn me, because it means that I can slow down from my always-10kms-above-the-speed-limit driving to reach a more acceptable speed before I come across a police car.
I know this type of driver behaviour doesn’t exist in China…but does it exist in your country?

There’s nothing quite like going to a club full of eighteen-year-olds to make one feel all the weight of one’s twenty years.
Last night, I went with some friends to a club called Click Click here in Melbourne, right in the heart of the men’s district (where you’ll find such classy stripping establishments as The Men’s Gallery, Goldfingers, Dallas Bar, etc.).
When queuing up outside I thought the crowd to be strange. Why was everyone showing ID to get in the door? Then I got in and realised. Wall-to-wall guys with long hair and skinny jeans. Girls with lace footless tights and plaid miniskirts. The average age of the people there would have been eighteen, nineteen. I felt like an imposter, a cradlesnatcher - and literally shyed away from a few guys who had to be at least two years younger than me because I feared my wrinkles would show in brighter lighting.
Thank god the music was good to dance and mosh to though…you know you’re in a retro nineties club when Aqua is followed by MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Nirvana and the Vengaboys.

My mum is made of awesome.
Today, she bought me sneakers from the “Stella McCartney for Adidas” range. Plus, she bought me a white Adidas polo tshirt as well.1
At times like this, I really love my mum…especially since she’s promised that we can go to another warehouse clearance tomorrow where we can get brands like Calvin Klein at 85% off.
We may argue about a lot of things, but the women in my family are united by their love of shopping and bargains.
1Though, I had to pay her back because “I earn my own money and should use it wisely”.
