March 24 2007: Where Japan Isn’t Part Of Asia
Filed under Asian-ness & Family
My brother was explaining to me how he had met one of our cousin’s friends.
“Is he Asian?” I ask (legitimately I think, because our cousin is incredibly fobby).
“Mmm…I don’t know,” my brother replies. “It’s hard to tell with the black hair, he might be Japanese or something.”
Dumbfounded silence.
“Dude,” I say. “You do realise that Asian means ‘from Asia’ right? Asia includes Japan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Phillipines, India, etc. etc.”
“Oh.”
If he wasn’t ten years old and my own brother, I’d willingly attest to him being brain-dead.

My brother did that once, I was explaining to him tha our grandmother’s maiden name was Portuguese and he got all excited and yelled out “Does that mean we’re Brazilian?!” Yup, that’s exactly what it means *headdesk* It was really funny though… for about a second.

Hahaha your brother is hilarious!
My younger brother is the “blonde one” in the family, too.
This reminds me of a blonde moment of this one girl in my Drama class:
some girl: I used to live in Alaska
blonde girl: Oh my gosh. Shut up! That’s sooo cool… you’ve lived outside of the US!
lol

*stares* What do they teach kids in school these days? Don’t they have geography… then again, in junior high school I was constantly very amazed that my classmates had no idea how to localize Great Britain or India on the map. I didn’t have any problems with it, since at home we used to have this big world map right above the dining table (on the wall of course), so I took such things as ‘find this huge country on the map’ a given.
Still, it was so hilarious: “It’s hard to tell with the black hair, he might be Japanese or something.” :D

You know, I’d agree with you. Except, that’s exactly the type of thing I’d come out with…

Next, ask him if he knows what sushi is.
If he answers -
* Don’t know - 0 points.
* Japanese food - 10 points.
* Raw fish - -100 points.
* A Japanese dish with rice in it - 100000 points!
XD (I’m having a hard time convincing my family that sushi is indeed not raw fish)
