Shopping Tip #35

Don’t ignore low-market chain stores like Target.

While I wouldn’t suggest that you buy signature pieces from those stores (e.g. flowery tops/dresses/skirts), it is a good idea to stock up at Target (or the like) when it comes to plain basics, or things that you can wear no matter what the current trend. Best of all, if you wait until the end of the season, you can get things at a huge bargain if you scour the clearance racks.

For instance, today I bought:

  1. Red boobtube (with inbuilt support)
  2. White boobtube (with inbuilt support)
  3. Black miniskirt (with white piping and detailing)
  4. Red strapless cotton dress
  5. Blue strapless cotton top
red dress

And in total, I only paid $20.70AUD (convert?). The total recommended retail price was approximately $117AUD.

It’s best to scour the end-of-summer clearance racks, rather than end-of-winter. After all, you can always layer summer tops with leggings and boots for a boho winter look, but wearing thick winter knits in summer is a tad hard.

When it comes down to it, it’s hard to beat a plain cotton top. Keep that in mind.

And just because I promised I’d start posting photos, that’s one of me in the red strapless cotton dress (please, ignore the blotches!). As you can see, I’ve paired it with my cropped black shrug, and a thin black silk scarf tied around my waist.

If I wanted to be more boho, I’d wear black leggings and ballet flats (and maybe replace the shrug with a black bomber jacket), but if I’m aiming for something a tad more formal, I’d wear my slingback black leather stilettos. Accessories do make a difference!

  1. Target FTW. (You wouldn’t believe how much I shop there… It’s all we have in the sticks.)

  2. That’s how I shop a lot, just for basics and things that can easily be matched with other things. It saves a lot of money and quiet frankly it can sometimes make for unique (but good!) outfits.

  3. You are my fashion idol. To me everything should be paired with full length jeans and sneakers. I have got to learn how to dress myself.

  4. I always thought it was funny that other girls would scoff at the idea of shopping at Target. We’re not all rolling in money, and they have some cool stuff there. So shut up. (Er, not you, Manda.)

  5. Target is best for bathing suits. I’m one of those people who likes a new one every summer.

  6. I do that with Hennes & Mauritz too. Their quality isn’t always the best, but it is possible to find very nice basic items that can easily be matched with something else. I think pretty much all my t-shirts and the like are from them.

Last Saturday I found a push-up bra with matching undie (beautiful light blue) for NOK 50, more or less AUD 10, when it normally costs around AUD 45. And I bought a green t-shirt for pretty much the same amount. So, yeah, these kind of stores are perfect for these things. That was something!

Anyway, thanks for the picture…oh I love pictures…oh I love clothes, and …SHOPPING!

  7. I get almost all my clothes from Target-type stores. I’ll reserve the designer shopping for when I’m rolling in dough. I wonder when that will be? :P
